Disclaimer
A starting point, not legal advice. This wording was drafted for a paediatric speech and language therapy practice; check it reflects your own services before relying on it.
This website is information, not an assessment. Reading about speech and language development can be reassuring or worrying, and neither feeling is a substitute for having your actual child seen by a qualified professional. Every child's development is its own story.
Private therapy complements NHS services; it never replaces them. I'm an independent practitioner, not part of the NHS. If your child is on an NHS speech and language therapy waiting list or already receiving NHS care, staying on that pathway alongside any private work is usually the right decision, and with your consent I coordinate with NHS colleagues so the two run together rather than in competition.
When to see your GP, health visitor or paediatrician. Some things need medical eyes before, or alongside, speech and language therapy. Please speak to your GP or health visitor promptly if you have any concerns about your child's hearing, including frequent ear infections, since a hearing test is quick and free and often the smartest first step; if your child regularly coughs or chokes on food or drink, or feeding is a struggle; if your child has lost words or skills they previously had; or if you're worried about their development more broadly than speech alone. None of these are cause for panic, and all of them deserve proper checking by the right professional.
No outcome is promised. Speech and language therapy has a solid evidence base, and I'll always be honest about what it can and can't offer your child. But no ethical therapist guarantees a result, and you should be wary of any who does. Parent words on this site are shared with written permission, anonymised, and describe individual experiences rather than promises.
A note on the cheerfulness. This site is bright because the clinic is bright. It is still a regulated health profession: HCPC registration, RCSLT membership, an enhanced DBS check, insurance and supervision sit underneath every game we play.
